Return-to-duty testing is required for commercial drivers who have violated Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) drug and alcohol regulations. After completing the necessary Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) process, drivers must take and pass a return-to-duty drug test to be cleared to resume their duties.

Once a driver completes the required SAP services, they are ready for the return-to-duty drug test. The test ensures that the individual is no longer using prohibited substances and is fit to return to work in compliance with FMCSA guidelines.

  1. Complete SAP Services: Before testing you must meet with a DOT SAP to have an evaluation and assessment. They will make treatment recommendations. Once this is completed, you will be informed by your SAP that you are ready for return-to-duty testing.
  2. Schedule Your Test: The next part of the return-to-duty process is to contact AMH Nationwide. Our customer service team is available to guide you through these next steps. We offer quick scheduling, often as soon as the same day.
  3. Take the Drug or Alcohol Test: Our certified labs will perform your test using the latest technology to ensure accurate results. You may have to test for drugs or alcohol. If you need a drug test it will include testing for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, and phencyclidine (PCP), as recommended by YOUR SAP requirements.
  4. We Report to the Clearinghouse: Once we get your negative return-to-duty test, you will name us as your C/TPA and we can then change your status in the Clearinghouse to “not prohibited.” This streamlined process allows you to quickly resume your duties as a driver.
