Drug & Alcohol Screening
Drug testing can be performed on several types of samples including urine, hair, blood and saliva. However, urine drug testing remains the most common method.
Urine is usually the test of choice for employment drug screening. It’s quick, affordable, and is the established drug test for many federal industries such as the Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Railroad, Federal Pipeline and Hazardous Material, and U.S. Coast Guard. Urine collection is often the “go to” drug and alcohol screening method for post-accident, return to duty, and reasonable suspicion scenarios. It’s also the most commonly ordered test for probation.
Urine testing can be set up as a lab test or as an onsite instant result option. The lab-based urine drug and alcohol screening means it always goes to the lab and includes integrity checks to ensure the urine specimen given is consistent with human urine. Integrity checks included are specific gravity, pH, temperature and creatinine. Instant result options (RADAR) often produce answers within 30 minutes of collection. However, in the case of a non-negative, that test will always automatically get sent to the lab for further testing. This is to ensure all positives are confirmed with a secondary methodology before being reported.
Although the most common panel for a urine drug test is a 5-panel, we can test for most drugs with a urine sample. The 5-panel drug and alcohol screening will check for the 5 separate drug classifications: cocaine, PCP ( phencyclidine), marijuana, opiates, and amphetamines. Other drugs you might consider testing for might include barbiturates, benzodiazepines, methadone, propoxyphene, and expanded opiates such as hydrocodone/Vicodin and oxycodone. We also provide various health care professional panels designed for workers that commonly have access to a wide variety of prescription drugs. These panels are ideal for pharmacy, hospital, and veterinary settings. If you have a concern about a certain substance, you should discuss it with customer care so we can help you decide the best type of test for you.
The average length of detection on a urine sample would be about 1 to 3 days for most substances. One exception to this would be marijuana, which can remain detectable in urine for as long as 3 to 4 weeks. If you are looking to go back further, you might consider drug testing by a hair follicle sample, which can significantly lengthen the detection times.
