Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic hallucinogen often used for short-term medical sedation in humans and animals. Often found in either liquid or powder form, it is also known by the street names of Special K, Cat Tranquilizer, Vitamin K, and Kit Kat, among others. It is produced by many countries including the U.S.A. for use in doctor’s offices and veterinary clinics for anesthesia, however it is also sometimes taken by individuals with the intention of treating depression or psychiatric disorders. Be aware, ketamine has NOT been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for this purpose, with the specific exception of a variation known as esketamine, administered through a nasal spray called SPRAVATO® to combat treatment-resistant depression. Ketamine itself has been labeled a schedule III controlled substance by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration due to its potential for abuse and moderate risk of physical and/or psychological dependence.
Ketamine is traditionally referred to within a category of substances known as “club drugs”, substances that are frequently distributed among acquaintances at nightclubs, raves, and private parties. As such, when used for illicit purposes it is often stolen from legitimate sources then distributed amongst partygoers, rather than being sold as a street drug on the illegal drug market. In liquid form, ketamine is usually taken by injection, though as a powder it can be smoked or snorted. In either form, however, it can be mixed with other fluids to be taken in combination, or as a way of contaminating a drink. This, along with its effects of amnesia, loss of awareness, and hallucination, causes it to be periodically used to facilitate sexual assault and “date-rape” attacks, with victims being unable to remember details leading to their vulnerability.
While it is difficult to detect one-time incidents of ketamine induction, laboratory testing for ketamine is helpful for tracking its long-term abuse. As it is often distributed among young people at parties, many do not realize how much is being taken, and often are not aware of its potential effects. In addition to amnesia and hallucination, ketamine can also cause the distortion of sight and sound, perilously slowed breathing, heavy nausea, cognitive impairment, as well as a loss of consciousness. In the weeks following ketamine use, Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD) has also been observed, causing prolonged visual and cognitive befuddlement to those affected. As such, exercise caution when attending parties or events in unfamiliar locations, and report symptoms of ketamine overdose immediately to help avoid unwanted exposure and vulnerability.
