EIA (homogenous) or Elisa (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) (heterogeneous) screening technology, GCMS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry) confirmation technology of non-negative presumptive positives
Clinical applications
There are 90-day (3-month hair test) extended detection times when compared to drug testing by urine, blood, and oral swab which allows for observed hair collection when adulteration of urine sample is suspected. We can now offer a variety of different hair drug test panels, including the 10-panel hair test, that can go beyond that standard 90-day lookback.
This is used to clarify confusing or conflicting results for pre-employment, pain management, and even false positive probation urine drug test results, court-ordered hair drug testing, hair drug testing for child custody and divorce cases, testing a child or loved one, and post-rehab testing. Hair collections are difficult or impossible to adulterate. (*For child custody and child protective services scenarios, consider 5-, 7-, 9-, etc. panel hair drug test environmental exposure, ChildGuard.)
General Limitations
Detection will show after 5 to 10 days from initial drug use in hair sample.

Example 10 Panel Hair Drug Test: 6 Month Hair Drug Test
Question: Hello, I have recently been hired at a new trucking company and heard that they not only do a 10 panel hair test but it goes back 6 months to 1 year! I do not use marijuana regularly but when my wife and I were on vacation 6 months ago it was legal in that state. I am worried now that I could get asked to take a random drug test and lose my job! Does a hair drug test really go back 6 months or longer? Please help!
Response: As you know, you work in a safety sensitive industry. While hair testing is not mandated for your industry, many trucking companies have moved over to requiring a hair drug test for employment and may even ask for a random drug test. While using marijuana may have been legal where you were, using drugs is simply not a good idea when you work in a safety-sensitive industry like trucking, aviation, pipeline, oil and gas, and railroad. As far as what your company is likely doing, consider this. In order to officially go back 6 months the test has to be ordered that way and it would also cost the company more to go back 6 months rather than the standard 3 month look back. It is unlikely that your company would spend the extra money on a hair test, as well as the additional cost to go back 6 months. However, in the event that the hair test sample is a body hair collection, it can sometimes go back a lot further than a standard 90 day hair test. Overall, if you want to be safe about it an anonymous 6 month hair test would offer some reassurance for you!
10 Panel Hair Follicle Drug Test FAQs
How many labs provide the 10 panel hair test?
This test is orderable through only specialty hair test labs and therefore is not available at just any hair collection site. While we have an option to search for a collection site, if you need a 10-panel hair test it is best to call customer service.
Do all labs complete the 10 panel hair follicle drug test in the same way?
No. Not all tests are not completed in the same way by every lab. Certain drugs, like amphetamines and methamphetamines, may be counted as separate drugs. Other labs, instead of including drugs like oxycodone with hydrocodone and other expanded opiates, will separate them. Both of these scenarios can greatly affect your result.
Should I choose the 10 panel hair test for all drugs?
No; our 10-panel hair follicle drug test only measures the following substances: ● Amphetamines/methamphetamine
● Barbiturates
● Benzodiazepines
● Cocaine
● Marijuana
● Methadone
● Opiates and expanded prescription opiates
● Oxycodone
● PCP (phencyclidine)
● Propoxyphene. So, for example, if you want to test for methaqualone, a 10-panel urine test would be the one to choose.
20- and 30-panel drug tests seem like they test a lot more substances than a 10-panel hair follicle drug test. Do they?
Let’s be sure you know what you are getting in this case. These so-called 20- and 30-panel tests are intentionally misleading so that you feel like you are getting more and therefore willing to spend more. Don’t be surprised to find the price for these panels to be much higher than ours! Many people choose and purchase a 20- or 30-panel test, thinking that what they will get is a test of as many substances. Unfortunately, instead of testing for only the substances themselves, many 20- and 30-panel drug tests will also count metabolites and drug variations as separate substances. These 20- or 30-panel drug tests are the same tests we offer, we are just adding it properly.
Is there a way to be sure of what any hair follicle drug test will test for?
Whether you are comparing labs that offer 10-panel hair tests, or 20- or 30-panel hair follicle drug testing, the only way to be sure about what will be tested is to call customer service so we can best address your specific needs.
What other information besides substances should I look for when comparing 10-, 20- or 30-panel hair follicle drug tests from different labs?
In addition to the list of substances a lab tests, it’s also important to confirm how they define certain substances. For example, identify whether a lab separates substances in the same drug group, such as methamphetamines and amphetamines, or counts them as the same drug. It’s also a good idea to check whether the lab counts metabolites or specific variations of drugs as separate substances. If you have questions once again just give us a call.
“what does a hair follicle test result look like?
Hair follicle test results are typically reported as a comprehensive analysis of drug use patterns over a specific period. The report may detail the presence or absence of various substances, including drugs or their metabolites. Results often include a list of detected substances, their concentrations, and corresponding cutoff levels. Some reports may present a visual representation, such as a graph, illustrating drug concentrations along the hair shaft. The specific format can vary between testing facilities, but the results aim to provide a clear overview of the individual’s drug use history. If you have questions about interpreting a hair follicle test result, it is recommended to consult with the testing facility or healthcare professional for a detailed explanation based on your unique situation.”
