Information on STD Testing\Gonorrhea

Written By admin on
Question:

Hello AMH,

I need more information on gonorrhea testing. I’m a law student at well known law school on the east coast. I’ve been committed to my boyfriend for 10 years but I’ve recently been curious. I’m a fairly young law student and I haven’t had many sexual experiences aside from my boyfriend. So, a month ago my curiosity got the best of me and I acted on my terrible thoughts. After joining a dating site I met another attached guy. We had sex without protection (crazy I know) and I started to notice yellow discharge in my under ware. I rushed to the nearest clinic and turns out I had gonorrhea. I was disgusted with myself and riddle with guilt. For days I didn’t sleep but I was too ashamed to tell my boyfriend. I figured if was only a one time thing I would just get help. Last week it happened again. I didn’t feel any symptoms but I know from my research that with gonorrhea often times women do not have symptoms. Well now I’ve been freaking out because I read an article that said gonorrhea antibiotics can build resistance to antibiotics. Do I have anything to worry about?

Janay W, Worcester, MA

Answer:

Hello Janay,

I completely understand your concern. Let me begin by saying any concerns with your health should always be address with a licensed medical professional. Neisseria gonorrheae is the organism that cause the bacterial infection gonorrhea. As one of the oldest, it is one of the most well known sexually transmitted disease. GonorrheaThis organism is transferred sexually and it typically can live out of the body for more than a couple of minutes. Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotics.  Overtime organisms can evolve to resist antibiotics. For example gonorrhea used to be treated regularly with penicillin but overtime the organism mutated to become resistant. Scientists do believe that eventually gonorrhea will be untreatable but that is not the case now. As long as you take the antibiotics as prescribed you should be in the clear. Again consult with a licensed medical professional before making any decision about your health.

I Need More Information On HTLV-1 After Traveling Abroad?

Question:

Hi AMH Nationwide,

I need more information on HTLV-1 Recently I returned home from Thailand. I was there for three weeks with a group of my college friends. We were there as a present to ourselves for completing law school. One of our first nights out I met a really cute guy my age. We spent time bonding my entire trip. I need the HTLV-1 test because a week before it was time to return home this guy and I had sex.

The sex wasn’t really planned so we did not use protection. Although the guy was really nice and seemed fairly normal I’m kind of freaking out. Before our trip to Thailand I only had 3 sexual partners; all of my past sexual partners were former committed boyfriends. I’ve already been tested for the normal STDs and everything seems fine but I’ve heard so much about this HTLV-1. I’ve heard this virus has seen a huge increase in foreign countries.

Answer:

Hello Susan,

I’ll start by saying it is unlikely that you have the HTLV-1 virus. Although there has been a relatively significant increase in reported cases, this influx is pretty contained to specific regions. The closest area to Thailand that has been affected by this influx is in Japan. All things considered, an exposure to this virus is extremely dangerous. HTLV-1 is spread sexually, by blood and by breast milk.

Once infected  HTLV-1 can cause a host of

HTLV-1 health problems including leukemia, lymphoma, bronchiectasis and more. It could be decades before the host of this virus has any symptoms from the mention health problems,  Although, this virus is extremely dangerous there have been very few studies on it as it only affects .2 percent of the world’s population. Of the .2 percent most areas that are  affected, are remote. Although the likelihood of you having this infection is extremely low, if you feel like you want to be tested you should. If you need more information about this virus please contact our office.
